Dorset Wildlife Trust photography competition 2025
I was so happy that this shot won the Dorset Wildlife Trust competition. I was looking around my garden for insects just after dark last spring and found this Nomad Bee sleeping on a spent rose flower in my garden. The bee was totally dormant and I was able to take a series of shots just sat in the garden. I went back out in the morning and managed to film the bee waking up on my phone.

This was a really special result for me and a chance to showcase one of my favourite heathland specialist species - the Heather Crab Spider (Thomisus onustus). This was an early morning shot, taken at about 5am, and the female spider was patiently sat guarding her egg sac.
