Dorset Wildlife Trust photography competition 2025

I was so happy that this shot won the Dorset Wildlife Trust competition.  I was looking around my garden for insects just after dark last spring and found this Nomad Bee sleeping on a spent rose flower in my garden.  The bee was totally dormant and I was able to take a series of shots just sat in the garden.  I went back out in the morning and managed to film the bee waking up on my phone.

This was a really special result for me and a chance to showcase one of my favourite heathland specialist species - the Heather Crab Spider (Thomisus onustus).  This was an early morning shot, taken at about 5am, and the female spider was patiently sat guarding her egg sac.  It was an honour to achieve this result amongst some amazing photographers from around the world.  If you're interested in seeing the winners and finalists then have a look at the CUPOTY website....
